IGF-1 stands for “insulin like growth factor 1.” What is the role of IGF-1?  IGF-1 is an anabolic peptide hormone that has the role of stimulating growth, and to a lesser degree supporting maintenance of normal blood sugar levels. It was formerly called somatomedin (or somatomedin C) because it’s a peptide in the somatomedin family.  It’s been determined that IGF1 is a “single chain 70-amino acid polypeptide cross-linked by 3 disulfide bridges.”
